Volunteering is fun, rewarding, and an excellent opportunity for practising your Spanish. That’s why we’ve put together these packages in collaboration with our partner; this way you can learn Spanish and make a difference to local communities, all while exploring the breathtaking country of Argentina.
Volunteer Projects in Buenos Aires
VOLUNTEER IN AN ORPHANAGE
Nestled in the suburbs of Buenos Aires are three houses, which 40 underprivileged children and teenagers call home. The kids at this NGO-registered shelter all have different stories: some have been abandoned by their parents, others have been removed from their families because their parents have been imprisoned, or are in rehabilitation due to psychological disorders. Some may have lost their families to tragedy. Groups of 15 children are assigned to 2 staff members each, who willingly shower love and attention on them, but are always need of help.
This volunteer program is available all year long, for a minimum stay of one month. If your visit coincides with the school holidays (December-January) you will work at the shelter from 5.30pm, as the children spend afternoons in a summer camp.
HELP IN THE KITCHEN OF A COMMUNITY CENTE
This community centre functions as a training centre for adults and children, offering services such as after-school support and English classes. There are also two business ventures housed here – a bakery and a textile centre – where adults can pick up new, marketable skills. As a volunteer, you will help in the kitchen, preparing and servicing breakfast, lunch and snacks to the members of this community centre on a daily basis. This is a great opportunity to mix with the locals and practice your Spanish with colleagues and customers.
This project is available all year long for minimum of 2 weeks, except for the first 2 weeks of January.
GARDEN IN A HOSPITAL
This organic garden was created by volunteers to give the patients at this psychiatric hospital a space to learn and share activities in a safe, open-air environment together with members of the local community. Of the 1300 patients here, those in advanced stages of recovery and are close to their date of release, work in this social setting to help reintegrate them into society. Daily tasks include weeding, planting and harvesting. You can also learn about landscaping, and how to use natural pesticides and herbicides to ensure organic production.
This project is available all year round, for a minimum of 2 weeks’ stay.
HELP IN A KINDERGARTEN IN BUENOS AIRES
Facing an urgent need for a childcare centre, a local mother used her own resources to buy a piece of land on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and with help and donations from various volunteers and neighbours, built 3 classrooms and a playground, providing a safe place for 60 children aged 3 to 5 years old to play, eat, socialise and start the first stages of their education. Kids are provided with breakfast and a warm lunch every day, and a full-time teacher trains parents and volunteers on how to assist with educational activities such as sports, music and the arts.
This project is available for a minimum of 2 weeks year-round, except during the 2-week school holiday in July and the summer holidays from December to January.
TEACH ENGLISH IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES
In addition to the above projects, we also offer various programs to native English speakers, to teach English to children and adults. If you are adept in Spanish, you may also want to look into some of our school support projects. Please contact us to ask for more details.
