Program description

The volunteering program is designed to give volunteers the opportunity to teach local children, care for injured or abandoned wildlife, and fully immerse themselves in the South African bush. Volunteers are vital to the success of the programs and really make an impact on the communities. Monday through to Friday you will be teaching a group of eight children, ages 13-16, about the environment, the importance of protecting wildlife.

Your accommodation

Located in the middle of the bush, the camp is rustic and the project does their very best to make sure everyone is kept clean, comfortable, and well fed. You will enjoy hot showers, running water, and solar-powered lights in your traditional chalets. You may be sharing your chalet with up to 5other volunteers but everyone has their own bed and space to store clothes and personal items.

  • Return transfer from Johannesburg Airport
  • Airport pick up every days at 7am, 5-6h of travel time
  • Transport to and from the project 
  • Free wifi during the journey 

There are also flights between Johannesbrug and Hodespruit, which last 1h20. 


  • Visit Kruger National Park for a safari  
  • Bar in the camp (it isn't allowed to buy alcohol during the shopping) 
  • Barbecue and swimming pool available in the camp 
  • Many places to meet with the other volunteers

  • 18 or over 
  • Basic level of competency in English 
A deposit of 300 € must be paid 7 days after sending your reservation and then the balance must be sent to us no more than 12 weeks before the start of your project.
For stays in less than 12 weeks: the full amount must be paid to confirm the reservation. 


A 50% deposit is required for booking. Balance payment is due 4 weeks prior to departure. In case of cancellation before start date, all fees will be refunded, except the deposit. In case of cancellation after start date, there will be no refund.


The aim of the founders of the project 

Ian and Michele Merrifield officially opened DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage in 2006. The Bush School & Wildlife centre was opened with the mission of educating and inspiring local children to value their environment and stimulate community development. Through the different programs, more than 4,000 children have been reached.
