Program description

Inclusive Agriculture: In Portugal, as all around the world, the importance of producing and consuming local products is growing, and it has become an important tool for fighting climate change  and social inequalities. At the same time, there’s a low and difficult access to the labor market by people with intellectual or physical disabilities which makes it more difficult for these individuals to organize their future and to have a decent life with fair opportunities.

This program aims to insert people with disabilities into the labor market through training and developing personal and socio-professional skills, in the context of the Agri-food sector.

In this program, volunteers will join a non-profit and will help and support the local host center in their daily tasks. The tasks are built around agriculture activities, such as planting and sowing, weeding, ground covering, assembly of vegetable baskets and other general agriculture tasks.

Volunteers Tasks

The tasks in this program, may vary according to the needs at the time and the time of the year. The work is supervised by the staff, but after receiving instructions the volunteer can be working as an independent member of the team.

The organization intends to give an opportunity and integrate everyone that has some kind of disability in the portuguese community.

This happens throught trainning and continued development of capacities that will allow them to find and get a job that they are capable to do.

Agriculture is still one of the biggest trades in Portugal, so bringing these people back to the most traditional way of doing it is also giving it a new life. In Semear all work done in the field is 100% organic, almost no machinery is used and they are constantely trying to find new (old) ways of taking care of the crops.

Besides the field work they also have a grocery store where some of the products are sold, this store has special prices for those in need, as do the vegetable baskets that are distribuited to families that sometimes rely on supports like this to live their day-to-day.
